Stage One: The Story Often Arrives Before the Script
By the time anyone calls “action” on a short drama set, someone has already worked out which story is worth the gamble. Tracing a few hits backward often reveals a book at the start of the pipeline. The novel Shutout by Jami Davenport is the foundation for ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance revolving around a secret child. Bound by Honor, the mafia arranged-marriage series ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, is drawn from a novel by Cora Reilly. The Korean office romance Quiet in the Office!, released in 2026 and given a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. A number of app owners also run reading businesses, which keeps source material what is reelshort close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater runs the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. If there is no book to work from, writers fall back on proven tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, family drama and identity reveals. It falls to the script to condense a long drama story into scenes, each serving up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Stage Two: Familiar Faces in the Cast
Casting is where the format’s economics come into view on screen. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep repeating the same names. Noah Fearnley starred in ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, both on GoodShort in 2025, were headlined by Rosa Singerman, who played opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. Leads with a following on one app come to the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Producers also cast with a specific viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. A production team in Los Angeles belongs to DramaBox.
Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days
According to TheWrap, a Western short drama generally costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format offers a similar picture, putting a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. A 70-episode series shot in eight days works out to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day, as simple arithmetic shows. Slimmer numbers still have been reported by Chinese producers selling abroad, with Jiuzhou Culture placing a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Jiuzhou also said about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations, while 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Trimming to 60–100 Seconds
In the edit suite, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are sliced from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is structured around a question the next episode pledges to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, the mechanism that pulls you from one installment to the next. Taken together, the slivers of a 70-episode series add up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts differ widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Because ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Put simply, editors are editing video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Stage Five: Placing the Paywall
The final creative decision is also a commercial one. Free access covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap lays out. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes unlock with coins; ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog, or buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews. Since prices differ by country, platform and promotion, your store may show something different. Placement is where the controversy lies: among the most common complaints about these apps are paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and best avoided.
Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series
The latest production stage does away with the camera entirely. ReelShort now offers animated motion comics alongside its live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic that lists no cast; it centers on heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer get away. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series has the same title, but it should not be confused with this one. DramaWave has gone the furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line
Traditional studios have taken notice; Fox Entertainment offers the plainest example. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, accepted an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to making more than 200 vertical titles over two years. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.
A Quick Look at the Production Line
The logic of the business comes into focus once the stages are set side by side. Much of the rest is organized around the shoot, which is the expensive, fixed block. Pre-tested scripts tend to arrive as novels or familiar tropes, known faces carry the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall drive the edit. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The table below lays out typical time and cost at each stage, using only publicly reported figures. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable number has been published.
| Stage of production | Typical time / cost | What goes on |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and script | No public figure | A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel |
| The casting stage | No public figure | Leads are cast, often actors who already have short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage |
| Filming | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed for a vertical frame |
| The edit | Episodes of 60–100 seconds | The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); on ReelShort, about 60 coins per later episode | Viewers unlock episodes with coins, with ads or with a weekly pass costing about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animated series | Costs undisclosed | Motion comics such as The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases AI-generated |
| Studio co-production | 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio makes vertical series for an app |
